A HGV driver has been banned from the road for 14 months after crashing his car while drink-driving.

Haydne Greenhalgh, of Dimond Street, Pembroke Dock, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal alcohol limit when he appeared before Haverfordwest magistrates on Tuesday, April 23.

He was found to have 46mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

Stephen Mallison, prosecuting, said police were called by a member of the public who reported a crash on the A487 at Fishguard at 8.15pm on April 5.

The caller stated that the vehicle only had three wheels and the driver smelt of alcohol.

Officers arrived at the scene to find the badly damaged Audi A3 in the middle of the carriageway with Greenhalgh, 37, nearby.

He stated he had lost control while driving and officers noticed that his eyes were glazed and the smell of intoxicants coming from him.

Greenhalgh, who was previously of clean character, told police he had consumed a ‘couple of pints’ before driving, and had not eaten.

Nick Devonald, defending, said: “He made a full and frank admission to police at the scene, repeated this morning.

“He bitterly regrets this matter.”

Mr Devonald added that Greenhalgh had worked as a HGV driver for 15 years, and would lose his job as a result of the offence.

“He has known nothing else, as a result of his foolish actions on the day in question it will be difficult for him to find jobs in the future.”

The court heard that Greenhalgh had not intended to drive, but had argued with his partner when he called to request a lift home.

“He hit a kerb and lost control of the vehicle due to the weather conditions.”

A letter from Greenhalgh’s employer described the incident as out of character, adding that he was considered honest and hardworking.

Magistrates ordered Greenhalgh to pay £195 made up of a fine, costs and a surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 14 months.
