A CHARITY set up in Newcastle Emlyn over seventy years ago has bowed out by donating its remaining funds to Meddygfa Emlyn, enabling the health centre to buy much-needed equipment for patients.
The Newcastle Emlyn Motor Ambulance Charity began life under the chairmanship of local GP Stanley Budd by providing the town and surrounding area with a motor ambulance.
With the advent of the NHS in 1948 the need for the ambulance disappeared, so surplus funds were invested in Government stock and the interest which accrued annually distributed to the elderly, the sick, and the infirm in the area.
To date the fund has made financial donations at Christmas time to over five hundred deserving people in the district.
Sadly, the number of committee members diminished over the years and an appeal for more to join the group proved unsuccessful.
