A COUNCIL leader is opposing the latest plans for further pylons to be put in place as part of the Green GEN Tywi Teifi route.

Cllr Darren Price, leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, has set out his opposition to the plans for pylons to connect the Lan Fawr Energy Park to the new National Grid substation in Carmarthen, which would see pylons through areas including Lampeter.

Cllr Price is calling on Green GEN Cymru to instead use underground cabling options.

Cllr Price said: “We know that it is vitally important to generate greener energy, but the means by which we carry that green energy needs to be done sensitively.

“The message from local communities across Carmarthenshire is clear – they feel that overhead transmission lines are detrimental to the local amenity, and they want to see the lines placed underground.

“We know that cable-ploughing is possible and we have a company here in Carmarthenshire which already carries out this work across the UK and the rest of Europe.

“Utilising the cable ploughing technique would enable us to deliver the much-needed green energy in a way which does not negatively impact on the natural environment, and I am calling on Green GEN to do just that.

“This is a multi-billion pound investment which will be with us for generations. Green GEN have a duty to ensure that it does properly and in a way which does not adversely impact on local communities.”

A consultation on the new 132kV lines is running until March 6, 2024.
