A ROTARY club in Ceredigion raised more than £1,000 during its annual street collection just before Christmas.

Clwb Rotari Aberaeron/Aberaeron Rotary Club A’r Cylch held its 22nd annual Wales Air Ambulance street collection just before Christmas where members took to the streets to raise funds for the vital charity. They were out in all weathers, with the Friday being cool but blustery and the Saturday, a cool but showery day.

A total of £1,028.32 was collected and the club thanks everyone who donated. There was an option of card donation this year which the club says helped to boost the amount donated.

The club also continued its support of Min y Mor Residential Care Home by becoming real-life Santa’s, delivering gifts to the residents and staff on Christmas Eve. The gifts were presented by club president Ian Lampert.

Clwb Rotari Aberaeron is looking towards supporting more people and groups in 2024 including to send a young person to the Rotary Young Leaders Award five-day residential course which involves challenging outdoor activities in the Brecon Beacons.

The club is offering to send one young person – aged 16 or 17 at the start of the course in July or August. The residential course sees attendees put in groups where they learn new activities and teach said activities, learning skills of working and living together, helping each other, communicate and solve problems. Some of the activities can include kayaking, orienteering, caving and climbing as well as team building exercises but the activities are weather dependent.

Any youth leader, sports coach, parent or relative or teacher wishing to nominate a young person who has shown commitment to their community through volunteering, caring, coaching etc or has the potential to lead to attend can do so by contacting the rotary club. Students do not have to be highly academic, super fit or able bodied as the centre is fully accessible and will cater for a wide range of physical or sensory disabilities. Candidates should however be comfortable in water as a number of the events take place in or around water.

The rotary club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at The Castle Hotel, Aberaeron at 7pm.
