The mother of one of the greatest military commanders to lead Wales was honoured to the hilt last weekend when Elen, the mother of Owain Glyndwr, was celebrated in her native homeland in Ceredigion.
The festival was directed by internationally renowned performer and former tv presenter Eddie Ladd, who is herself a native of Ceredigion.
Ffair Elen opened on Friday evening when four Elens traced the boundaries of Llandysul as they would have appeared in 1350, using smoke.
Llandysul was chosen as the venue as Elen’s father, Tomas ap Llywelyn, was the descendant of the princes of Deheubarth, and the family held lands in the commotes of Iscoed and Gwynionydd which were in the Llandysul area.
The marking of the boundaries was followed by an event at Tysul Churchl where Llandysul Community Gospel Choir sang a piece specially composed for the event by Sandie Steffaneti and Ed Holden.
Owain Glyndwr Day, on Saturday, September 16, opened with one of the 12 Elens being swept down the Teifi in a kayak, wearing a gold skirt.
At 5pm a mural was unveiled in commemoration of Elen, which had been painted by Meinir Mathias.
This was followed by a parade through the town to escort the 12 Elens to the display of music and drama held in Llandysul Park.
Elen’s son, Owain ap Gruffydd, (more commonly known as Owain Glyndwr, c.1354-c1415) led a15-year-long revolt with the aim of ending English rule in Wales. He was an educated lawyer, forming the first Welsh parliament under his rule.
