When a lifeboat crew lands a member as valuable as Dr Adrian Stallwood, then they know they’re onto a winner.
By day, Adrian works as a consultant in emergency medicine, with the result that his assistance to the Cardigan RNLI is going to be considerable.
Dr Stallwood has been using his medical background to deliver crucial medical training to the RNLI crews around Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire for some considerable time.
But as began working alongside the crews and finding out moreabout what life as a crew member is all about, he decided to jump on board himself, and become a fully-fledged crew member.
“We’re absolutely delighted to formally bring him on board here with the team at Cardigan,” commented Cardigan RNLI’s helm, Mark Williams.
“The first step for Adrian, like all other members of our crew, is to complete his shore crew training which will enable him to safely prepare the boats for launch, help to launch and recover them from the water and also make them ready for their next outing.
“But there’s no doubt that Adrian will carry on delivering his medical training to our teams and he's already been working with Cardigan crew members Oliver James and Lisa Kenny as well as a team of medical students, to set us various medical scenarios.”
Dr Adrian Stallwood graduated in Medicine from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, London, in 1995. He then worked as a junior doctor in London, in high-intensity posts where his learning took place almost exclusively on the job.
He relocated to Wales in 1997, and after further hospital and community practice, began a career in Emergency Medicine. He is now a Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine at Hywel Dda Health Board, working in a team that provides a major acute 24/7 service.
He is also a skilled clinical teacher, and in addition to his work with the local RNLI crews, he is responsible for training and assessing Cardiff University undergraduates and Foundation doctors. He also holds Instructor status in Advanced Life Support for the Resuscitation Council UK.
