The opera is set in a fictional version of ancient China in the court of Princess Turandot, where suitors who fail to solve her riddles get brutally killed. A mysterious prince answers a riddle correctly and holds all the power, as well as a secret.

The opera is performed in three acts and was written by Giacomo Puccini and finished posthumously by Franco Alfano in 1926.
