NEWCASTLE Emlyn Sheepdog Trials returned with a bang with entries coming from as far afield as Belgium, Germany, Holland and Poland!

The event once again took place at Cilfallen following a three-year hiatus caused by the Covid pandemic.

It had been put back a week due to the heatwave, with the welfare of dogs, sheep and competitors considered the priority.

Trials judge Kelvin Broad had an extremely long day as there were 97 runs in all.

These demonstrated both the National and South Wales styles of trialing, featuring dogs being guided by their handler to move sheep around the field through a variety of gates and penning.

Participation in the sport is enjoyed by triallists ranging in age from 13 to the 90s!

The committee would like to thank Margaret Evans along with Gethin for the use of the field at Cilfallen; Huw Davies, Trefaesfawr, and family and also Euros Evans, Penffynnon and family for loan of the sheep.

Also thanks must go to committee members for the preparation beforehand and good teamwork on the day; to judge Kelvin Broad and Newcastle Emlyn town mayor Cllr Jayne Ludgate for her presence and donations and to this year’s sponsors.

Unfortunately, president Llyr Jones was unable to attend the re-sheduled trials due to a prior commitment.

Thanks also to Kim and Carl, caterers, for the refreshments and a special thanks go to the competitors and their dogs for supporting again this year. Profits from the trials as well as the sale of the raffle will be donated to Derwen Ward, Glangwili Hospital at the annual dinner at the end of the year.
