NEWCASTLE Emlyn Town Council have secured a £10,000 National Lottery Jubilee Grant to fund a community project to create an outdoor structure marking The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The double-sided walled structure – 4m long x 2m high – has been dubbed ‘The Honeycomb Project’.

Earmarked for a site at Dol Llewelyn, it will celebrate nature and the arts.

Newly-re-elected town mayor Cllr Jayne Ludgate said: “it’s an interesting community project and we will be looking for volunteers to participate.

“We will be displaying further details of the project in the Gallery of the Cawdor Hall during the Bank Holiday weekend.”

Describing the proposal in their application, the town council said: “It’s design and build process will collaborate and engage people from various local groups and organisations by creating something functional, yet unique, bold, colourful, and exciting.

“It will combine items that we want, need, and like as a community. We want to do our bit to combat climate change.

“We need a system to harvest rainwater for our communal wildflower garden. We like to showcase our creative our artistic abilities.

“This project will encourage and care for the natural world and will have a lasting impact for many years to come.

“We have engaged with representatives of various organisations within the community and the feedback has been encouraging.

“We are all confident that it will be a project that we as a collaboration can manage, is achievable and will promote relationships and develop skills and experiences across generations.”

The planned structure will be constructed from a hexagon shape, hence its name the Honeycomb.

“A mass of 3D hollow regular hexagons will be made by individuals and joined together perfectly to create a honeycomb pattern wall structure, optimising strength and stability.

“The honeycomb tessellation represents kindness, unity, and warmth which reflects the nature of our people.”

“The hollows of the honeycomb structure will display a combination of mixed media artwork and wildlife refuge/habitat for various pollinators which play a special role in native ecosystems.

“Sandwiched between both honeycomb wall facades there will be a rainwater storing system which harvests rainwater from the roof structure.”
