RESIDENTS of a Teifi Valley village are campaigning for a 20 mph speed limit following a spate of accidents.

People in Ponthirwaun say fast-moving vehicles approaching along the B4570 from the direction of Neuadd Cross represent a risk to both life and limb.

Local county councillor Lyndon Lloyd – who is now campaigning on their behalf – reckons the village’s narrow stone bridge is the most dangerous spot on the road from Cardigan to Lampeter.

“It’s a narrow bridge built during the days of the horse and cart,” he told the Tivy-Side. “Drivers are ignoring the 40 mph speed limit as they approach Ponthirwaun from Neuadd Cross and the 30 mph zone before the bridge is only advisory.

“The villagers are asking for a reduction in the speed limit to 20 mph and I have written to Ceredigion County Council requesting them to treat this area as an urgent matter.

“I have also asked Cardigan police to monitor the speed of traffic passing through the village as residents have reported damage to vehicle wings and mirrors.

“People tend to think of south Ceredigion as quiet and rural but this is a busy road which acts as link between Cardigan and Lampeter.

“It also should be remembered that crossing that bridge is extremely hazardous for pedestrians as well.”
