NEWCASTLE Emlyn’s Royal British Legion branch celebrated their 100th anniversary at the town’s war memorial on Thursday when chairman Ken Jones invited mayor Cllr Jayne Ludgate to append a Legion 100th anniversary pennant to the British Standard paraded by Jed Lewis (Cardigan branch), acting for Paul Abrams.
The Emlyn branch was launched only five weeks after the Royal British Legion itself was formed.
Prayers were said by branch chaplain Rev Jonathan Parker and the ceremony attended by vice-president Mike Beckingsale, representing Ken Rathbone (president), Peter Woolley (immediate past chairman), Rob Mills (vice-chairman), Kari Byrne and Teresa O’Ryan (joint secretaries), Viv Lote (treasurer) and Ieuan James (poppy appeal organiser).
Mr Jones expressed the grateful thanks of members past and present for the ‘enormous support’ provided by the town council, organisations, businesses, churches and residents throughout the past century.
