SUNDAY, the last day of Refugee Week under this year’s theme: ‘We Cannot Walk Alone’ was celebrated in Cardigan by a coming together of the local Amnesty group and Croeso Teifi, the charity who have welcomed two Syrian refugee families into the town.

A group of over twenty met on the bridge before walking along the footpath to Cilgerran Wildlife Park in the sunshine.

An energetic game of football was followed by a picnic.

Plans for Croeso Teifi to bring a third family have had to be postponed because of Covid.

“If another family is able to integrate and contribute to the community in the way that the two present families have, Cardigan would be all the richer for it,” said a spokesperson.

“Welcoming refugees who have to flee their own country to seek safety for themselves and their children, is a mark of our own security and generosity.

“Wales has a proud tradition of offering sanctuary to those in need and the welcome which has been extended through the community re-settlement scheme shows that Ceredigion is no exception to that tradition.”

Amnesty International run a campaign to support refugees and asylum seekers, encouraging members to become involved with local projects.

One of their successful initiatives has been the ‘Football Welcomes’ campaign, supported by clubs across the UK.
