TWO sisters are raising a glass to their fledgling New Quay gin company after scooping a series of international awards.

Becky Jones and Tania Kenny only launched their Welsh Sister artisan gin brand last year and already have a string of impressive successes to their name.

They have created two varieties of small batch, artisan dry gins distilled at In the Welsh Wind Distillery based at the old Gogerddan Arms, Tan-y-groes,

The Welsh Sisters picked up two prizes at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2020. They took home a silver award for their Morwyn gin and a bronze for The Captain’s Wife.

That follows hot on the heels of success at the World Gin awards 2020, where their Morwyn gin was chosen as best contemporary Welsh gin and The Captain’s Wife earned a silver accolade.

“We are completely over the moon with the news of our awards,” said Tania.

“Thankfully we were able to reach out to our customers using social media and on our website during lockdown. It has all been a steep learning curve but we have had fantastic support from everyone especially Business Wales and Cywain.

“When we started producing our own Welsh gin, we wanted to do more than make it delicious. We wanted to tell the story of women from the past who inspire us in the present.

“Growing up on the Welsh coast, we were always aware of the women who’ve played such an important role in these communities. Their stories have remained hidden for some time so we wanted to help uncover their history and celebrate these iconic women. We’re here today because of their bravery and courage.”

Welsh Sisters is available to purchase online at www.welshsisters.com, as well as at their shop in Manchester House, New Quay, famous for being the draper’s shop in Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood.

The shop is now open every afternoon for gin sampling.
