Tivyside Agricultural Show
By Anwen Francis
The equine flu might have affected entries at several agricultural and horse shows this year, but the Tivyside Agricultural Show was well supported with Supreme of Show and Local Champion horse being awarded to the Menai Stud’s Section D Stallion Menai Casius.
Described by the judge Delyth Jones of Penrhiwllan as a “perfectly moving horse with a look at me presence once he entered the ring” the winning stallion from Rhydowen near Llandysul was shown to perfection as usual by Tomos Jones. His father, Peter was delighted with the win.
He said: “It’s the second year in succession that we’ve taken Supreme of Show with two different horses, 2018 under saddle and this year in hand. This is Menai Casius’s first year in the show ring and he won at Aberystwyth back in May. It’s a great win and a pre- Royal Welsh outing. I’m absolutely delighted.”
The reserve supreme horse was awarded to the homebred Heavy Horse mare Penbryn Celtic Morning Grace property of Jason and Helen Harries of Plwmp. The judge also took a keen interest in this mare in the line-up of section champions and told the Tivyside that it was “very close” between the Supreme and Reserve spot.
The show jumping, organised by the Tivyside Pony Club attracted a number of competitors, with Millie Davies of Rhos jumping a lovely clear in the 80cms and 90cm class gaining two wins.
The Tivyside Pony Club’s District Commissioner Helen Williams was delighted with the support received.
She said: “Show jumping hasn’t been held at the show for around 10 years or more and it was super and positive to see riders of all ages competing throughout the day. We also hope that we have gained a few new members to join the Pony Club and it was excellent to work alongside our local show.”
Over in the cattle section, the judge for the Interbreed Beef Championship was Tudur Edwards from north Wales. He was presented with six champion animals and after a detailed inspection of each exhibit, he chose the limousin cross heifer owned by Ifan James Phillips of Newcastle Emlyn who was helped by his father John.
Ifan was over the moon as he explains: “We are showing at the Royal Welsh next week. It felt amazing, this was our second time for us to win the interbreed on the trot with family and friends all around the ring - it can’t get better!”
Judge Edwards said: “Once again, I have six terrific animals in front of me and I thank the competitors. A lot of hard work has gone into getting them here and I congratulate all.”
Reserve Interbreed was awarded to the Thomas Family of Llechwedd, Capel Iwan.
The horticulture, cookery and craft tent was a blooming success with cakes, flowers, garments, wines and garden produce. Sisters Janet Jones and Marina Davies of Adpar, Newcastle Emlyn nearly wiped the board with their successes gaining several first and second placings with their gins, liqueurs and chutneys.
Delyth Brown was this year’s secretary. 2019 was her first year in the post and she thoroughly enjoyed her role.
“What a day! I’ve gathered a lot of knowledge on how to improve things for next year. I would like to thank each and every competitor for entering and supporting the show. Your feedback received to make the show next year even better was greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the trade stands for their support and attendance. Huge thank you to all the sponsors - the show wouldn’t have gone ahead without your ongoing support.
“Last but certainly not least, thank you to all the judges, stewards and volunteers for your efforts. Team work makes dream work! Tivyside show 2019...over and out!”
