A CALL has been made to clear the debris surrounding Cardigan bridge following the recent flooding along the Teifi.

Cllr Graham Evans told a meeting of the town council that he was ‘greatly concerned’ to see trees and other debris trapped under the bridge.

“The course of the river has changed following the flooding and silt the other side has raised three feet or more and altered the course of the river towards the Strand,” he said.

“We need to contact National Resources Wales to look at the situation and to see what they are going to do about it.

“If we don’t get an urgent response, then we insist that someone from NRW comes here to talk to us about it.”

Cllr Yvonne O’Neill said: “We are going to end up with structural damage if something is not done.”

Mayor of Cardigan Cllr John Adams-Lewis agreed, adding: “There is also a problem in the Mwldan. Several people have complained to me that it needs clearing. When floods come, it will surely have an effect.”

Cllr Clive Davies said he was looking into the idea of setting up a tree catcher at Llechryd Bridge to prevent further damage there during flood periods, which would in turn benefit Cardigan further downstream.

“There were plans to do this years ago but they were never completed. I have talked to a farmer who had an agreement to do this on his land,” said Cllr Davies.
