A FLOOD alert for the lower reaches of the River Teifi has been issued by Natural Resources Wales.

The Teifi remains above the flood alert level between Llandysul and Cardigan and further rain will produce additional level increases during this evening and into Saturday morning.

The heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until 8pm tonight with heavy showers also expected during Saturday. The combination of ground conditions, existing river levels and forecast rainfall quantities gives a high risk of flooding over the weekend.

High tides are also predicted for this evening. The southerly winds will to gale force eight for a time shortly before high tide. South-westerly force six winds are expected this evening. Offshore waves are expected to be moderate to large.

The combination of large waves together with high winds means that wave overtopping is possible for a few exposed locations around the Ceredigion coastline.

Dyfed-Powys Police communication centre is experiencing high demand due to the adverse weather.

A police spokesman said: “Please help us make the most of our resources and to ensure that the right calls are getting through to us. We urge you to consider your options before contacting us.

“If you are calling about a tree or power/telephone poles that are down - you should only call us to report this if there is a significant risk to others - in this case call 999. Please only call the police about weather-related issues if it is urgent.”
