FIVE years and nearly £35,000 later raising money for local good causes, Cardigan Charity Fundraising Appeal is still going strong.

And if one of the original founders Paul Davies has anything to do with it, he will still be at it in another five years.

“I have always fund-raised and wanted to help other people and nothing has changed in that respect,” said Cardigan taxi driver Paul, who set up the group back in November 2013 with his late wife Tricia, daughter Fran, Pam Morris and Chris Thomas. Sue Davies later joined in 2016.

“I thought we had the ability to be successful in raising money for local good causes and I am the sort of character that if I set my mind to do something, then I will do it.

“There is definitely a need in this area for something like the Fundraising Appeal as there are so many good, deserving causes we can help out.”

Over the past five years, the group has come up with all sorts of schemes to bring in cash, from a live mouse racing night to sponsored bike rides and walks, coffee morning, bucket collections, karaoke, treasure hunts and live entertainment nights.

And those efforts have benefited both organisations and individuals throughout the Cardigan area, from Cardigan Cancer Care, the Skanda Vale Hospice, loccal schools and scouts and Welsh Air Ambulance to the Mia Lloyd appeal and Riley’s Wish to Walk.

“The support we get from local people and businesses has been fantastic and without that we could not do what we do,” said Paul.

“We have done four events this year and raised about £10,000 but we are always looking to do more and for anyone who would like to help out, especially at events where people can get involved by just manning the door or selling raffle tickets.

“People don’t necessarily have to come to committee meetings but any extra help would be always welcome.”
