Increases in meals on wheels look set to go ahead in Ceredigion despite objections from local councillors.
This week's Cabinet meeting over-ruled an objection from the healthier communities scrutiny committee that the increase from £3.50 to £5 was too much.
Cllr Lyndon Lloyd who proposed that the increase should be kept to £4 said: "I am speaking on behalf of the elderly people in our community. This is going to have a huge effect."
But leader Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn said that the council had to find £9m in savings.
"I can understand your worries but we have to bite the bullet."
Cllr Elizabeth Evans claimed that the scrutiny committee had not been given the chance to look at the increases properly.
"It doesn't give you the right to ignore the scrutiny process," she told the leader.
But Cllr ap Gwynn said: "The scrutiny process has been as open as it can be."
A final decision on the budget will be made at the full council meeting later this month.
