MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, Stephen Crabb, has welcomed the actions taken by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and Ofcom to tackle nuisance callers.

The ICO and Ofcom have recently published a joint action plan to tackle the issue of nuisance calls and help protect consumers. Stephen Crabb been pushing for action to be taken to deal with nuisance callers following concerns raised with him by local residents about this growing problem.

The ICO and Ofcom share responsibility for taking action against organisations that generate nuisance calls or messages, tackling those companies who make nuisance marketing calls or send unsolicited marketing text messages, as well as silent and abandoned calls.

Over the coming months, the ICO and Ofcom are prioritising targeted enforcement to stop organisations generating nuisance calls and messages, as well as working with communications providers to improve the tracing of nuisance calls and messages.

They will be carrying out a review of the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) assessing the impact of the TPS and how well it is currently working for consumers. Updated guidance will help to clarify the practices that are acceptable and will ensure that consumers know who to complain to and how to protect themselves from nuisance calls and messages.

Commenting on the news, Stephen Crabb MP said,

“ I am very pleased that the issue of nuisance callers is being take up by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and Ofcom. So many people have got in touch with me exasperated that there is not more they can do to protect themselves from being targeted from unwanted calls. I have not spoken to any household who has not been bothered by these calls. I have been particularly concerned about those who are elderly or ill and are being disturbed by these calls.”
