CARDIGAN’S Theatr Mwldan Film Society returns for another season on September 8 with Ash Is Purest White (15), a complex romantic tragedy from director Jia Zhang-ke.
Opening in 2001, just as China is starting to embrace capitalism, against the backdrop of a depressed coal-mining town in which Qiao (Tao Zhao) is involved with a local gangster.
Later Qiao is taken away, and then returned a number of years later to a China she barely recognises.
Everyone and everything she knew has moved on and she tries to make sense of what her future holds, spurred on initially by a need to avenge her misfortune.
“A resilient gangster’s moll burns with misguided love in Jia Zhangke’s melancholy drama,” writes The Guardian, while Empire says: “Ash Is Purest White is engrossing, surprising and affecting.”
