Oriel Mwldan is delighted to display the work of their patron Mary Lloyd Jones in an integral and visually stunning exhibition entitled Iaith Gyntaf from Saturday 13 January Sunday 25 February 2007.

Mary Lloyd Jones attempts to draw back the curtain to reveal and celebrate the richness of minority languages and cultures that remain unseen and overlooked by those who only speak a global language.

In this exhibition visual links with the ancient literature of Wales, Ireland, Brittany and Scotland, with prehistoric carvings, the Ogham and Bardic Alphabet are made in order to draw attention to the issue of language loss and to build a bridge between the visual, oral and written means of communication.

These multi layered works use oils on canvas and mixed media on paper. Images are used from the National Library of Wales collections, and material from Brest University, The Irish Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. These at times are juxtaposed with texts that make reference to historic figures that were instrumental in preserving Welsh manuscripts for prosperity: Ieuan Fardd, Lewis Morris, Edward Lhuyd, Iolo Morganwg and Sir John Rhys. Those familiar with Welsh literature will recognize quotations from " Y Gododdin", "Taliesin", and "Y Mabinogi".

A visually stunning exhibition that seeks to illuminate the hidden depths of our Celtic languages.
