DEVIOUS PEOPLE: Politicians are devious people. Mr Blair is no exception. He denies the nurses and firemen a living wage, yet he and his cronies gave themselves a rise of 40 per cent before their backsides warmed the seats in the House of Commons. He is prepared to give to illegal immigrants and asylum seekers people who have not contributed a brass farthing to this country. I sincerely hope this is remembered by the public at the next election.

CLEAN JOKE: Somebody in the town hall has a sense of humour. It shows a deal of cynicism and a remarkable touch of arrogance to provide the local street cleaners with jackets bearing the message: Lewisham The Cleanest Streets in London. Where do these fantasies come from? Where do these people live? Certainly nowhere near me.

Mike Hage, Wellmeadow Road, SE6

COUNCILLOR CASH: I write in reply to John Orwell's letter (November 13) in which he accuses councillors of indulging themselves in the swill of public finances. Councillors' allowances were determined by an independent external panel and the council merely implemented these recommendations. To me, this seems preferable to a position where councillors set their own allowances.

Cllr Peter Brooks,Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council,

CRIME STOPPERS: I am delighted to report there was a major crackdown on street crime outside New Cross Station on November 13. A group of police officers caught a number of motorists using the bus lane. Those recently mugged will be so pleased.

ALARM CALL: I note from your article A day in the life of an MP (November 13) you have me rising at 7.45am. In fact, I was in the office at 8am that morning, having risen, as I always do, at 6.30am.

Nick Raynsford MP

LISTEN UP: I agree with Peter Richardson about Lewisham's traffic management officers. For Lewisham read "no consultation". In local by-elections for Lee Green and Downham the Lib Dems have won. Watch out, Labour listen more!
