OXFORD United’s squad are set to be permanently reminded of the club’s greatest achievements when they play at the Kassam Stadium next season.

Supporters’ trust OxVox have announced plans to erect a mural at the back of the East Stand, depicting iconic images from the U’s past and adding much-needed colour to the ground.

They have today launched a crowdfunding page with the aim of raising £7,000 to pay for the printed boards that will cover the corrugated steel after getting the all-clear from stadium landlords Firoka.

They are hopeful that if the total is reached quickly, the boards can be in place for the first home game of the 2019/20 season.

OxVox chairman Paul Peros said the general feeling among supporters is that since the departure of the ‘Ultras’ – a group responsible for adding colourful displays to the East Stand – last season, the stadium had lost some of its vibrancy.

“We hope to enlist the support of OxVox members and Oxford United fans as a whole to brighten the matchday experience and hopefully help raise the atmosphere at our home games,” he said.

“When it became clear the Ultras were going to disband, we decided to revisit our plans for the mural.

“We knew the loss of colour would be sorely missed but feel with the help of United fans we can bring that area back to life.”

OxVox got permission from Firoz Kassam after meeting the stadium owner in London, with the only conditions over the erection of the boards being that they are graffiti proof and could be moved to other areas of the stadium should advertising be sold in the East Stand.

Peros said they were determined to make sure every United supporter had the chance to play their part in the idea.

Fans will get the opportunity to vote for the images in a series of polls which will see pictures from different eras compete with each other for pride of place in the display.

“We want to involve as many supporters as possible – to not only fund, but to help choose the images that will be used,” he said.

“We will be representing various eras of our history such as the forming of the club, the first team picture, the Headington United days, promotions, Milk Cup glory and modern day heroes.

“We will pick three available pictures from each point in our history and fans will be able to vote online for their favourite in each section.

“Sadly not all pictures are available as they are sometimes agency owned and carry a prohibitive cost, but we have a great selection to use and will be opening the voting shortly.

“Once funding is reached it is our aim to have the mural in place for the first game of the season. We have already secured a generous offer from Mick Denton of Denton Builders to fit once purchased.

“It is our overriding ambition to have a mural that fans are fully behind in both funding and design and that it helps bring much needed colour and a greater sense of home to the stadium. With your support we know we can get there.”
