IT MAY be traditionally more of a rugby stronghold, but Crymych has gone positively boxing barmy over the past week.

Residents have been raptly following the progress of Ioan and Garan Croft in the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham with more and more banners of support appearing around town the nearer the twins edge towards the finals.

The Cardigan ABC duo – part of a Welsh squad guaranteed of a record-equalling medal haul – are assured of at least bronze medals having reached today’s last four in their respective weight divisions.

“I must admit I don’t know much about boxing but – like everyone else around here – I’ve been glued to the television set over the past few days,” said one resident.

“I clearly remember seeing Ioan and Garan going on training runs around town when they were very small – it comes as no surprise to see them doing so well and putting Crymych on the map.”

The boys themselves have spoken of their delight of the support they have been receiving, not just back home but also in Birmingham as well.

Garan faces Aidan Walsh, of Northern Ireland, in the light-middleweight semi-finals at 4.30pm today, while Ioan meets Scotland’s Tyler Jolly in the welterweight semi-finals at 8pm.
