ALTHOUGH it is still four months away, a hugely popular local sevens rugby tournament could be under threat for the second year in succession because of the coronavirus crisis.

The annual Newport Pembs Barbarians Sevens Tournament, hosted by Newport RFC, has traditionally been held on Sunday of the spring holiday.

Winners of the 2019 tournament at Long Street Fields were Crymych of League One West, but the Preselimen were unable to defend their title last year due to the pandemic.

It is proposed to hold the 2021 event on Sunday, May 30, but with preparations necessary far earlier, one of the organisers said: “It is too early to make a hard and fast decision in regard to this year’s tournament, but we are hoping for the best and the popular sevens resuming.”
