A familiar figure on Ceredigion outdoor bowling greens Paul Monders showed his prowess at an altogether different sport when crowned singles champion in the highly-competitive Cardigan & District Darts League.

Former captain of Ceredigion champions Cardigan Bowling Club the 46-year-old postman had not played darts regularly for some years until making something of a comeback this season with local league champions Tafarn Yr Oen.

And he made quite a splash on his return to the oche to become champion in the face of stiff competition from nearly 40 competitors.

Monders, who defeated reigning champion Norman Jenkins in an earlier round, overcame Kevin Phillips of Castle RFC at the semi-final stage, losing the first leg but storming back to win with a brilliant 115 out (single 20, treble 19, double 19) in the deciding leg.

In the other semi-final Lamb Inn landlord Jamie Bowen (Tafarn Yr Oen) came through 2-1 against team-mate Chris Thomas.

Bowen appeared to be on his way to victory when taking a 2-0 lead in the final and having a throw to take the title. But Monders clawed back to win a thrilling match 3-2.

The Cardigan men’s league ladies singles title went to Barbara Edwards of Masons in Cilgerran who sprang a 3-2 final win over team-mate and licensee Francine Barber.

At the semi-final stage the eventual winner beat Helen Everton (Masons) 2-1 and Francine sprang a 2-0 win over Jen Quin (Grosvenor).
