Local clubs Crymych, Newcastle Emlyn and Cardigan take an early season break from league action on Saturday to compete in WRU cup competitions.

In the Plate, which is for division one and two clubs, League 1 West outfit Crymych visit Fishguard of League 2 West while Newcastle Emlyn, who were relegated from the Championship at the end of last term, host League 1 West rivals Hendy.

On the opening day of the season Crymych walloped visitors Llangennech but in their second outing at the weekend crashed to a 24-3 away defeat against Hendy.

Fishguard started the campaign with a 24-15 win at Kidwelly and followed up on Saturday by springing a 30-20 win over promoted visitors Milford Haven at The Moor in Goodwick

Many will see the Preselimen as strong favourites to overcome rivals in a league below them in the national set-up, but after opening the season in rip-roaring style it could prove imprudent to write off the chance of the Seagulls causing an upset.

After two games Emlyn have already given a clear indication of their intention to make a bold bid for a return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

The Teifisiders got off to a flyer in League 1 West with an emphatic 45-3 win at Gorseinon and kept to the straight and narrow in their second game with a 20-10 win over Aberystwyth at Ddol Wyber.

Their opponents Hendy lost narrowly at Felinfoel on the first day but bounced back in style on Saturday when brushing aside visitors Crymych 24-3.

Although the Carmarthenshire villagers are sure to give it their best shot in the Teifi Valley but the Red and Whites have started firing early and will be difficult to overcome on their Ddol Wyber stamping ground.

Division Three teams contest the Bowl competition with Cardigan of 3 West A having home advantage against Furnace United of 3 West B.

The Cardis suffered a setback when going down 10-7 at Llangwm but on Saturday emerged 31-8 winners over visitors St Davids at King George V Playing Field.

It has also been a case of mixed fortunes for Llanelli-based Furnace with a 55-8 opening day away win over Bynea and a 21-8 home defeat at the hands of Trimsaran.
