MACKENZIE Bown’s parents were shocked when their son’s newborn hearing test came back negative, now they want to help others in their position.

Mackenzie, or Kenzie to his parents, was diagnosed with severe to profound hearing loss in both ears at just one-month-old, in August 2018.

“You never believe this will happen to you but when it does your whole world comes crashing down,” said mum Rebecca, 31.

“You don’t know what to think or how to feel, you are hit with a thousand emotions and constantly asking yourself ‘why?’”

Neither Rebecca or father Jason, 32, had any deaf family, leaving them unsure how to proceed.

“Kenzie’s diagnosis was a huge shock to us as we don’t have any deaf relatives and neither of us as his parents suffer with hearing loss,” Rebecca said.

“Not having a reason why is something that we are all still trying to come to terms with.

“You constantly ask yourself ‘is this my fault’ or ‘did I do something wrong’ you can’t help but blame yourself.”

The lack of support the pair received made them want to do something to help others.

The parents decided they would raise money for the National Deaf Children’s Society, a leading deaf charity who aim to give deaf children the support they need.

“There’s very little support for deafness in the area,” Rebecca said. “There’s no one out there to support you.

“We had no idea, we’ve had to learn so much. You don’t realise how much is linked to hearing.

“We wanted to raise awareness in the area and raise money for the charity. We really want to get as many people to come as possible.”
