A GIANT seabass with a plastic-free message has swum its way into Pembroke Dock this week.

Bertie the Seabass, a sculpture made from stainless steel filled with beach-clean plastic, aims to get people thinking about the damage of plastic pollution on the marine environment.

The sculpture was created for the Turn the Tide on Plastic project led by Amroth and Saundersfoot community councils.

On Monday the statue was unveiled at its new residence outside the Pembroke Dock Library, where it will stay until mid-July.

Councillor Joshua Beynon, who led the drive to have Bertie brought to Pembroke Dock, stressed the need for something to be done about beach plastic.

“By the end of 2050, if we don’t do something, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea,” Cllr Beynon said.

“I’m glad all the schools came down, It’s important that the kids come because they’re the generation who will need to sort it out.”

Cllr Beynon added that now was the perfect time to have Bertie in the town, so people think about their plastic as they head to the beaches this summer.

Pembroke Dock Town Council is working with the Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum to provide workshops and beach cleans for the children within the local schools.

As part of the push to improve the area, the town council has arranged to two litter picker boards to be placed around the town.

The boards will have their own litter pickers attached, so anyone who wants to help pick litter can do so.
