A NEW footpath had been opened across the lock between Hakin Point and the Milford Waterfront allowing easier access for pedestrians.

The new footpath was installed as part of a series of repairs to the lock gates at the Milford Marina by the Port of Milford Haven.

Now, both sets of mitre gates allow pedestrians to cross during most states of the tide. The only time the crossing isn’t available is during ‘freeflow’ which is a period of two hours before each high tide.

There is a traffic light system and safety gates on approach to the walkways, which will work in conjunction to ensure the safety of the crossing. The gates and traffic light system will also be linked to the gate operating system, meaning that the pedestrian gates cannot be operated until the interlocking gates are closed and the pedestrian traffic light signals ‘green’.

Clare Stowell, Director of Tourism at the Port of Milford Haven said: “We’re really excited about the new footpath over the lock gates, not only will it be a boost for Milford Waterfront but it will also re-establish the pedestrian link between the communities of Milford Haven and Hakin which we know from speaking to the community is really valued.

"Our long term goal is to collaborate with partner organisations to reroute the Pembrokeshire Coast Path on to Milford Waterfront to give walkers a real taste of the Docks and Marina area, which are of course such an important part of the Milford Haven story.”

The series of improvements on the lock gates will also result in a quicker and more efficient turnaround through the locks for marina customers, as well as improving the amount of locking available in any 24hours.
