FREE seeds and young plants as well as great gardening advice were on offer during Seedy Saturday at Fishguard Farmers' Market last week.

The event was organised by Greening Fishguard and Goodwick and Transition Bro Gwaun (TBG).

Around 50 people attended the stall, manned by volunteers from both organisations, taking away stacks of seeds and seedlings.

"There was a real buzz about the place despite the dreadful weather," said the greening group's Julia Moffett.

"We sold gave away loads of plants in exchange for donations for Greening and TBG funds. There were really wonderful conversations going on and we had the pleasure of having Andrew Champman, the horticulturalist for Cardigan Castle, on hand to give out expert information.

"It also resulted in a group of people deciding to gather together to save Dr Bob's veg plot in West Street Car Park and a working party has been set up.

"A huge thank you to the volunteers who were on hand to help people with their horticultural choices and many many thanks to The Real Seed Company, Newport, for donating our core of quality stock."

Greening Fishguard and Goodwick also donated a RHS Really Wild wildflower kit to Ysgol Glannau Gwaun's gardening club. The young people attended Seedy Saturday to collect more seeds for their wonderful garden at the school.

Seedy Saturday is an annual event, but seeds are available every Saturday on the TBG stand at the Farmer's Market and some seeds and plants are available at the community fridge.

Other regular TBG events to reduce waste and increase sustainability include clothes swaps; sessions with the Pembrokeshire Remakery to provide training and skill-sharing opportunities for locals to learn how to repair household items and bikes.

The group also runs craft and play cafe sessions for parents with pre-school children and is planning community feasts, social events using surplus food where diners can share ideas and develop cookery skills and knowledge.
