FISHGUARD and Goodwick went Welsh cake crazy this weekend for the twin towns' inaugural Welsh cake competition.

More than 100 people celebrated St David's Day by visiting a dozen different local businesses and sampling their finest bakes.

Competitors put their own unique twist on the traditional recipe, with some adding cinnamon, others chocolate chips and orange. There was even a special ice cream entry.

Visitors had to score each establishment on its Welsh cakes with the final score being totted up at the end of the day.

Welsh cake connoisseurs paid £1.50 to sample the specialities of all 12 establishments with the money raised, a super £120 going to the Mayor's charities.

Fishguard Rugby Club won the coveted wooden rolling pin for its Welsh cakes fresh off the griddle, Second place went to Eilir's Hair Salon for heart shaped Welsh cakes made with granny's recipe and the Wool Shop took third place with a good traditional offering. Special mention went to Hooked@31 who served Welsh cake ice cream.

"Thank you to all the businesses and to everyone, who took part in the Welsh Cake Challenge," said mayor Jordan Ryan.

"It was a great success and raised £120 for the Mayor's Charities. Thank you to the Town Council for their support and to the Ocean Lab, Cresswells Cafe, Jenny Wren's and The Royal Oak."
