TENBY and Saundersfoot Community First Responders have won a Welsh award for their work.

They were judged top of their field against other much larger teams from throughout the country in the recent Welsh Ambulance Staff Awards 2018.

First Responders are community groups set up by the Welsh Ambulance Service, whose members respond to 999 calls and give life-saving treatment while an ambulance is on its way.

The local group's accolade - the Dr Jennifer Bucknell Community First Responder Award - was in recognition not only of the 999 calls attended by the team, but also for its work done within the community such as placing defibrillators and training the public in CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Said team co-ordinator Tony Wall: "We're absolutely thrilled to have received this national award in recognition of the hard work the team has put in over the past year.

"There are a lot of bigger CFR teams doing some great things in Wales, so the fact that our relatively-small team has won makes it even more special.

"The coming year promises to be our busiest yet. We'll continue adding to the more than 30 public access defibrillators (PADs) we've already placed in the local area.

"We'll also be receiving several new items of equipment, meaning we'll be able to respond to an even greater range of incidents - alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service - than ever before."

Mr Wall thanked the team's sponsors for their continued support, including Tenby Masonic Lodge which has recently made a donation of £2,150.

The cheque was handed over to Mr Wall and fellow team member Ben James by the Master of Tenby Lodge, Brian Hilling, on behalf of the Masonic Province of West Wales, which regularly makes significant donations to many local charities.
