STORMY weather on Saturday, October 13, was trumped by some powerful, atmospheric playing in the West Wales Brass Band Festival which produced another crop of noteworthy results for the hosts, Goodwick Brass Band.

Played for the first time at Haverfordwest High, the highly-competitive contest produced a creditable second place in the Championship section for Goodwick, with a prize of £125 and also the Best Percussion award. They were beaten only narrowly by the highly experienced Llwydcoed band.

Goodwick, under the baton of Matthew Jenkins, delivered a rousing performance of A King's Lie described as "well structured and well played with real drama and beauty" by adjudicators Ian Porthouse and David Hayward.

Percussion played a big part in the piece and there was a well-deserved award for Goodwick's Dafydd Ridgway, Tomas Lawrence, Carys Underwood and Adam Davies.

Storm Callum had managed to prevent not only bands but English adjudicator David Hirst from reaching Haverfordwest but there was great competition in all the sections and presenter David Hayward stepped in as adjudicator while Goodwick Chairman Tony Evans took over the announcements.

There was further encouragement for Goodwick in the Youth Section when their lively programme earned them the Silver Award and 11-year-old Sam Howell the Best Percussion section prize.

"Everyone pulled together very well to make the festival another great success," said Tony Evans, "and I must thank competitors, the public and sponsors for their most welcome support."
