WHEN retired teacher Martyn Williams was presented with the British Empire Medal for his charity work earlier this week, he completed a unique family double.

For just a few months ago his son, Chris, received the same award.

The Saundersfoot father and son have raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity through the popular Saundersfoot New year’s Day swim which they help organise every year

Martyn received his medal from the Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Miss Sara Edwards, in a ceremony at County Hall, Haverfordwest - just as postmaster Chris did in December.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised” said Martyn. “I attended Chris’s presentation at the end of last year and this time it was his turn to attend mine.”

The Saundersfoot swim has raised over half a million pounds since it began in 1984 with all the money going to charity and both men have been involved from the start.

Martyn is the former head of Religious Education at Pembroke School and an Estyn Inspector for many years. He is also well known in local rugby circles, being the oldest active WRU referee and a Life member of the WRU Referees Society.

He is a Life Member of both the Pembrokeshire Schools under 15 Rugby Union and the Welsh Schools Intermediate Group.
