A sculpture in the Castle Grounds at Newcastle Emlyn has been described as a “giant phallus” by a critic.

The new dragon egg sculpture set up in the grounds by the Heart of the Dragon festival was criticised by Ms E Davies n an email to the town council last week.

She added that other art installations in the area often ended up being vandalised or damaged and did “nothing to enhance the site”.

She said that many display cases had been vandalised and that others were “disintegrating” and that there is algae and rust on many of the railings.

Referring to plans to install new mosaics she added: “Who will clean them? Will they withstand vandalism?

“We could end up with a site littered with the broken remains of artworks that were intended to beautify it. People are not so keen to clean stuff up as they are to put it up,” she added.

Councillors noted the comments, Cllr Alan Jones said: “Nothing is completely vandalproof.”

Cllr Maureen Webley said: “We can’t stop doing things because of vandals, or we would do nothing there.”

She added that Pamela Gaunt of the Heart fo the Dragon had confirmed that the next stage of the dragon installation for the Castle Grounds had been made “as vandalproof” as possible.
