AN action day organised by campaigners against the proposed badger cull in north Pembrokeshire was held earlier this month – and another is planned for next weekend.

Pembrokeshire Against the Cull (PAC) set up information stalls in several towns in and around the county, including Cardigan, Newport . Haverfordwest, Narberth and Carmarthen.

The group, which includes many landowners in the proposed badger cull area, is campaigning in favour of bTB eradication through cattle based measures and a badger vaccination programme.

PAC spokesman Dr Adrian Stallwood said : "We take bovine TB seriously and recognise its impact on the farming community, of which many of us are a part. However, the science shows that at best, a cull will do next to nothing to control bovine TB. At worst, it will exacerbate the problem."

He added: "The Assembly’s own evidence admits it is highly likely to spread the disease to neighbouring farms. The experience of farmers in our group is that current cattle controls are simply not adequate and not being applied.

"The Welsh Assembly is voting imminently on legislation which will give it powers of entry for badger destruction. If passed, the legislation will pave the way for an extensive cull of all badgers in a large area of North Pembrokeshire, although the order will apply to the whole of Wales."

The group has produced a leaflet backed by statements from leading scientists in the field, and is staging another Action Day on Saturday.
