Concerned residents have set up a new website in opposition to a controversial Newport building.

The website, http://parrog.org.uk, has a homepage titled "Bettws Newydd - eyesore on the Parrog" and calls for people to sign an online petition against the construction, which will be presented to the National Park Authority who is dealing with the planning application.

The website shows images of the new house and the bungalow it replaced from several angles including arial pictures.

Many locals are angry about the visual impact of the structure, and say a building of this size should not have been allowed on this site.

The petition states: "We the undersigned find that the new dwelling, Bettws Newydd, already constructed at Newport Parrog, is visually much more intrusive than the previous dwelling and is a blot on such a special landscape.

"We therefore request that the PCNPA refuses retrospective consent, and gives serious consideration to revoking the 2006 planning consent, requiring instead, a replacement development which complies with development plan policies."

The website adds: "It is extremely difficult to see how anyone could argue that the new building is comparable with the one that has been replaced."

The original plans were granted approval in 2006, and a retrospective application was later made to vary conditions.

The application was withdrawn from December’s planning committee agenda for legal advice, and the applicant has now been told to make a fresh submission.

The website adds: "It is extremely difficult to see how anyone could argue that the new building is comparable with the one that has been replaced."

The application is likely to be considered by National Park planners on March 18th.

A National Park Authority spokesman said: "An application has been received by the Authority to vary the conditions imposed on the original planning consent and to retain the building at Bettws Newydd as now built.

"It is hoped to include the item on the agenda for the March meeting of the Development Management Committee, which is scheduled for the 18th. The application has been publicised and interested persons notified and any comments received will be considered.

"As with all applications that come before the Development Management Committee, objectors to and supporters of this proposal will have the chance to address the Committee."
