AFON Mêl Meadery, of New Quay, are celebrating after their Heather Mead matured in an ex-Madeira Penderyn cask was awarded ‘Highly Commended' at this year’s prestigious Great British Food Awards 2022.
Giovann Attard – judge and Head Chef at Norma London – said of the Mead produced by the Cross Inn-based business: “This Heather Mead is stunning, such a delicate and hearty taste perfect for an after-dinner aperitif.”
The team at Afon Mêl have developed an exclusive range of individual meads that have matured in the traditional way.
“Time plays an important part in the process; not only in the time given to the meads to mature but in the selected barrels used in the process,” said a spokesperson.
Working with Penderyn Distillery, their Meads have been finished in both ex-Madeira and ex-Bourbon Oak barrels previously used for Welsh whisky maturation.
Sam Cooper, owner, and head mead-maker at Afon Mêl, said: “To have two meads shortlisted and one of them to receive ‘Highly Commended’ is a testament to the skill and hard work of our staff at Afon Mêl meadery.
“Winning 'Highly Commended' at the GBF awards has been a great boost for us."
The Heather Mead matured in an ex-bourbon Penderyn whisky cask, at 15.9 per cent, was also a finalist in this year's competition.
