ABERPORTH’S Dydd Iau Mawr roared back to life on Thursday with a large crowd gathering at the Welfare Park to enjoy a barbecue and varied sports and entertainment.

Côr Blaenporth, led by conductor Margaret Daniel, performed earlier in the day before giving way to popular local rock combo Joe 90 as evening descended.

A variety of children’s sports - including tug of war - also took place on an area which has traditionally been the focal point of Dydd Iau Mawr over the years.

Festivities were launched following the revival of a near 100-year-old tradition.

In 1929 a bilingual declaration was written, confirming that the village Welfare Park belonged to the people of Aberporth.

The handwritten proclamation was supposed to be read out each year on Dydd Iau Mawr - the second Thursday in August.

But over the years the tradition has lapsed - until yesterday when local county councillor Clive Davies read it out to kick off day-long proceedings.
