It rained goals at two Costcutter Ceredigion League Cup ties as Cardigan Town of division one hammered Newcastle Emlyn Reserves 13-0 while division two newcomers Llechryd blew away Maesglas with an 11-2 win.

Ex-Penrhyncoch striker Liam Doherty was the star of the show for the Magpies, scoring seven goals as the visiting side were hopelessly outclassed on the day.

On two occasions the Emlyn defence cleared the ball straight to Doherty some 40 yards out and he dispatched it into the roof of the net.

The other players on the scoresheet were Callum Woolley, who hit a hat-trick, Callum Davies, Iwan James and Llion Williams.

The Magpies will expect a tougher test this weekend when they travel to take on tier four side Builth Wells of the Mid Wales League East in the Emrys Morgan Cup.

Maesglas lifted the coveted League Cup five times on the bounce between 1986 and 1990, but the Blues were given the runaround on their own Maes Radley stamping ground last weekend.

Llechyrd played some delightful one-touch football and for part of the 90 minutes the homesters were reduced to chasing shadows.

For the visitors, who led 6-1 after the opening 45 minutes, Luke James-Raymond claimed a hat-trick, and the other goals came via Cory Leanard-Davies, Josh Grota, Jac Blackford, Liam James and Owen Wilton, while the hard-pressed Blues defenders conceded two own goals.

In fairness to Maesglas they battled until the final whistle and they were rewarded with goals by John Rees and Adam Roberts.

Ffostrasol of the first division had few problems in reaching the next stage as they emerged 5-1 winners over division two new boys Pencader United in the Carmarthenshire village.

Cian Edwards bagged a brace of goals for Wanderers and also on target were Steffan Davies, Gethin Davies and Owain Patterson. Sebastian Davies-Wigley was on target for the home side.

Promoted New Quay have had a tough time in division one so far this season, but the Seasiders were successful in the League Cup when running out 4-1 winners over visitors Abeaeron Reserves at Parc Arthur.

Oliver Edwards and Charles Dent both netted twice for the home side and Endaf Williams for Aeron.

The other promoted club Crymych on the other hand are enjoying life in the top flight and they reached the next stage of the Cup with a 4-2 win over Crannog.

Scoring for the Preseli men were Ifan Davies, Deiniol Mathias, Sion Vaughan and Rhodri George, while Geroge Colven and Michael Glover netted for the visitors.

The last time the League Cup competition was completed was in season 2018-2019 when Llandysul beat Crannog 1-0 in the final at Cae Sgwar in Aberaeron.

In  the following season all football was suspended after games on Saturday, March 7, 2020, while the 2020-2021 campaign was cancelled without any action whatsoever due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
