FORMER Costcutter Ceredigion League division one side Newcastle Emlyn slipped to a 3-0 defeat away at Tregaron Turfs on the opening day of the newly-formed tier four Mid Wales League West.

Ifan Jones opened the scoring for the hosts, before a Daniel Owen double effectively settled the outcome before the interval.

Turfs, who joined the league as Cambrian Tyres Aberystwyth and District division one champions, were lively throughout and had the cutting edge through teenage striker Owen and skipper Dylan Davies.

And when Emlyn threatened the Turfs' defence stood firm, with central defender William Williams a tower of strength, with excellent support from Sam Jones and Dylan Jones.

Behind them goalkeeper Matt Toy dealt with everything that came his way, and there was no score in a closely fought opening 25 minutes.

It was virtually game, set and match by the interval, however, with Turfs three goals up and not looking like surrendering the initiative.

The homesters opened their account from a well-worked short corner, with the ball finding midfielder Ifan Jones, and from 22 yards he found the top corner of the net.

The advantage was doubled soon afterwards when Rhodri Jones broke down the left and crossed to the far post, where Daniel Owen headed home.

The killer third goal also came from a short corner, this time Owen picking up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and curling a great shot into the top corner, giving Tom James no chance.

At the other end Ethan Bockman was denied by Toy, but the Turfs consolidated their advantage and in the final quarter of the game they upped the tempo and went close to adding to their tally.

Meanwhile Aberaeron, who travel to face Tregaron Turfs in the ER Jenkins Cup on Friday evening, prevailed 3-2 winners at home against Dyffryn Banw in their opening game.

A Ryan Davies double and Llewellyn Lloyd gave the Seasiders a comfortable lead, whilst Efan Davies and Gerallt Davies replied for Banw, who travel to Parc Emlyn in the ER Jenkins Cup on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the league, a Nick Williams double, including a penalty, earned Tywyn Bryncrug a 4-0 opening night victory at Barmouth and Dyffryn United, with an own goal and Isaac Aldred securing the points late on.

Results: Aberaeron 3 Dyffryn Banw 2; Barmouth & Dyffryn 0 Tywyn Bryncrug 4; Tregaron Turfs 3 Newcastle Emlyn 0.
