THE Tanygroes café owner who runs the Meals on Wheels service has made a desperate appeal for more volunteer drivers.

Lyn Evans and daughter Rian deliver over 500 dinners a week from the Emlyn Café to all parts of south Ceredigion and occasionally into Carmarthenshire and north Pembrokeshire.

What has become a family tradition was launched back in 1990 by Lyn’s dad, Jon.

But Lyn has now revealed they are struggling due to a shortage of voluntary drivers.

“When the pandemic began we were doing okay as so many people were off work,” Lyn told the Tivy-Side.

“Now a lot are back in employment we’re finding ourselves really up against it.

“Rian and myself are out on the road every day – and on top of that we still have the café to run as well.

“Basically, we need seven drivers every day – even if someone is only available once a week it’d be handy.

“We deliver to places like Cardigan, Cilgerran and Boncath – and as far north as Ffos-y-Ffin.

“As far as Aberporth is concerned, we’re doing okay for drivers.”

Lyn points out that a Meals on Wheels volunteer driver can often be the only friendly face an isolated person might see during the day.

“The social aspect is very important,” he added.

“And many people still want a traditional home-cooked meal delivered fresh every day as opposed to getting food out of a freezer and reheating it in a microwave.”

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver can contact Lyn at Emlyn Café on 01239 810143. Travel expenses are provided.
