A DOZEN new jobs have been created as Co-op serves up its new food store in Newcastle Emlyn today (Friday, June 25).

It follows a £550,000 investment to provide a more spacious store in the town, and at 3,000 sq ft it is around twice the size of the original shop.

The retail giant has confirmed that the business now supports 21 local jobs - and says it now runs on 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Work started on the store, located on New Road between Cawdor Cars and the fire station, last November.

The original site on the main road through the town at Sycamore Street had no parking available, and there were complaints of people parking illegally to visit it.

A planning application for the store at the former New Road Antiques site was submitted to Carmarthenshire County Council in January 2020, and was approved subject to conditions.

Chris Ellis, Co-op Area Manager, said: “We are delighted to have an opportunity to carry out such a significant investment, launching Co-op’s newest store in Wales.

“The store has a fantastic look and, we have worked to develop the range, choice, products and services locally to create a really compelling offer to serve our community.

“Co-op is committed to connecting communities and making a difference locally, and our aim is to operate at the heart of local life.

“We also want customers to know that they can become a Member of the Co-op.

"In addition to unlocking additional value and personalised offers for themselves, our Members help to make a difference to local causes.

“Co-op donates 2p in every pound to community causes when Members swipe their Membership card when buying own-branded products.

“So, by shopping at the Co-op, our Members are also helping to make good things happen in the community.”

The new store includes customer car parking, a free ATM, a bakery and a Fairtrade coffee dispenser, and self-service tills are added.
