AN ‘innovative’ project to enable to communities access to free food and reduce food wastage has been launched in Aberporth.

The village is to have its own community fridge which will enable the community to access free food and cut back on food wastage.

The LEADER-funded project supported by the Cynnal y Cardi Local Action Group will see the fridge being opened this autumn at Canolfan Dyffryn.

This project which has received backing through the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government, will be only the second of its kind in Ceredigion.

The Aberporth community fridge comes as welcome news to the community following a successful grand award from the National Lottery Community Fund for a new village hall.

Aberporth Village Hall Chairman Richard Jennings said: “The community fridge is an important element to our H’eart of the Community’ vision for our new village hall.

“It will enable people to access fresh food for free. Looking forward once we have our new hall kitchen up and running, we will look at organising community food events.”

The community fridge will operate from Canolfan Dyffryn on a temporary basis until the new village hall is open in the spring of 2023.

The project includes the posts of a part-time co-ordinator and admin support – see www.aberporthvillagehall.co.uk for details.

The committee are also seeking volunteers to help with running the community fridge, which will include training courses.
