OSIAN Jones from Aberaeron has been successful in reaching the primary school shortlist in ‘Gwlad y Chants’ – a competition to create a new football chant to support Wales at Euro 2020 organised by Mentrau Iaith and the FAW.
‘Sea Chanty y Wal Goch’ is the name of Osian’s entry and it has been inspired by the recent sea shanty trend on social media.
Referring to some of Wales’ stars like Gareth Bale and Daniel James, Osian has masterfully set his own words of inspiration to Nathan Evans’ familiar tune ‘Wellerman’.
In order for Osian to bag the great prizes on offer he will need your support in the public vote that will be open until tomorrow (Friday) on Mentrau Iaith social media pages.
The winner of each category will receive a Wales shirt signed by the squad and the overall winner will have the opportunity to visit a Wales training session when deemed safe to do so.
The shortlists were chosen by a panel of judges that included the Sgorio presenter Sioned Dafydd, the musician and presenter of Y Wal Goch Yws Gwynedd, Y Cledrau frontman Joseff Owen and avid supporter Gwenno Teifi.
Sioned Dafydd said: “To me a good football chant needs to be funny, simple and something you can learn quite quickly. I always enjoy a bit of humour in a footy chant!”
Gwlad y Chants is a campaign in partnership between the FAW and Mentrau Iaith to hear more Welsh on the terraces in the future.
Steffan Rees, from Cered: Menter Iaith Ceredigion, said: “Osian’s chant is exceptionally good. It combines a familiar melody, catchy words that rhyme and fit well as well as a strong beat.”
