Cardigan's Extinction Rebellion group are arranging a family-friendly and Covid-safe event, as a part of a UK wide action by more than 60 coastal communities.

The event, to be held on Wednesday, June 9 will run from 10am until 7.30pm, in Cardigan and at Poppit Sands.

The event aims to draw attention to the serious flooding problems along coasts and rivers as a result of climate change.

Organisers hope to send a message to the world leaders at the G72 summit in Cornwall that they need to act now to address the issue.

"Behind all the fun activities is a more serious message," said one of the organisers.

"The Cardigan day is part of ‘Make The Wave’ - being organized across Britain and abroad - to draw attention to how climate change is threatening our coastal and river-side communities.

"The G7 conference is the meeting of leaders from the world’s seven biggest economies, which will be held in Cornwall on June 11 and 13.

"They’ll be discussing taking action on the world’s greatest challenges, focussing on climate change and Covid recovery.

"They need to know that coastal and inland communities are watching and are relying on them to make the right decisions."

She added: "As well as highlighting the global danger of sea level rise3, Cardigan XR’s action addresses the local issues of flooding in Cardigan, and along the Teifi valley.

"So many people have already been flooded or live with the fear of flooding - as we know from the residents of Llechryd, Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul, and many coastal towns and villages such as Llangrannog, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth. The list is long and gets longer every year. "

In Cardigan, from 10am onwards near the Otter statue, there will be an information stall on the Quay with a Message Machine where you can write your own message to the world leaders.

Banners will be hung and a river installation launched.

From 12.30 there will be street theatre by Small World Theatre, with a roving lighthouse on a bicycle.

On Poppit beach, from 3pm the Information stall and the Message Machine will be available .

The St.Dogmaels Sand Artist, Rachel Shiamh, will be making a large sand design

As it nears completion, about 3pm, the public will be invited to participate and leave their own sand messages.

The completed work will be filmed from a drone, posted on the internet and sent to the G7 leaders.

Bring your own picnic, bring a kite to fly, bring the kids and the dogs along, be part of the message.

An appearance by King Canute is expected around 4pm. He’ll be carried towards the sea from the Lifeboat Station with his rabble of courtiers.

At about 4.30 the King and his helpers will challenge the sea, where the tide will be coming in - unless he can hold it back!

The public are urged to bring their own gowns, cacophony, whistles, horns, hats, masks, flags and robes, colour, poles, staves, etc.

Contact 01559 371582 for more information about King Canute’s courtiers.

And if you’re a creative model-maker, or have circus skills, get in touch - your skills are needed.
