CARDIGAN town councillors are at crossed wires with BT over the town’s diminishing number of phone boxes.

While BT have proposed the removal of all kiosks which are rarely used, councillors want some retained for use in emergencies.

And they have expressed concern at BT plans to remove the phone box at Pont y Cleifion, near the bus station at Finch Square.

Cllr Elaine Evans argued there was a strong case for retaining a kiosk at such a location.

“It’s a shame they’re planning to get rid of the one from Finch Square,” she told colleagues.

Cllr Yvonne O’Neill agreed. “The problem is that they are taking out so many of these phone boxes that there is not going to be an option for people who don’t have mobiles,” she said.

“And young people tend to run out of credit and need to get hold of mum or dad.

“Some of these kiosks need to be kept – I don’t want to see all of them taken out.”

Cllr Clive Davies proposed asking BT which phone boxes in town they were looking to retain.

“We definitely cannot get rid of them all because we need some for emergency reasons,” he added.

Town mayor Cllr Debra Griffiths also backed the retention of some kiosks.

“It’s a shame they’re doing away with them – some should be left in town,” she said.
