A BUSY road is Bolton has been described as a “complete nightmare” by a business owner who worries about the speeds motorists are travelling on it.

Owner of MB Butchers, Marco Braga, started trading on Chorley Old Road in June and has been taken aback by the number of drivers who break the 30mph limit when they pass his shop.

He fears that it will not be long before someone is seriously hurt or worse due to a road accident.

There is an electric sign across the road from Marco’s shop which tells drivers how fast they are going but that fails to stop many from slowing down, he says.

Marco said: “It is a complete nightmare

“Cars are going at such a high speed with some going more than70mph.

“There are many elderly people and children around.

“Cars are going so fast that they would not be able to see people crossing. People do not respect the speed limit.

“I think that something bad will definitely happen here.”

Smithills councillor Roger Hayes said he had raised speeding issues in the area with Bolton Council. He is campaigning for stronger enforcement to be introduced across the borough.

Cllr Hayes said: “I have raised this a couple of times with the council.

“All over Bolton it is a massive problem. It is everywhere. We are campaigning to sort the problem out.”

Cllr Hayes added that he believes enforcement on roads is only stepped up when a serious accident happens.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is in the process of rolling out plans for a community speedwatch programme to crack down on those who flout the law.

Recently the force acknowledged that Bolton was GMP’s biggest borough of concern for road safety.

Chief Inspector Matt Bailey-Smith, of GMP’s Safer Transport Team, said: “Currently, Bolton is our highest area of ‘threat’ and is therefore subject to increasing deployments to look at issues of speed, anti-social use of vehicles and intelligence.

“This includes general patrolling, as well as regular roadside operations.

“I would also ask people to tell us about their concerns, whether that is a road where they feel unsafe or about a person who may be driving illegally or anti-socially so we can use this to inform our threat assessment.”
