FAKE food packaging warning of lower safety standards that trade deals with Donald Trump may bring have appeared on supermarket shelves.

Shoppers at the Co-op in Highworth saw the spoof products promising ‘lowest quality guaranteed’ on chicken and baby food from the parody brand ‘Trump Selection’.

Boxes of ‘freshly-chlorinated chicken’ warned that they are ‘100 per cent chemically-treated’ and ‘reared with no care by underpaid farmers then washed in chlorine to mask dirty conditions’.

Rice and vegetable baby food packs said they contained ‘traces of arsenic and pesticides to make your baby stronger’ and were illustrated with a picture of a man in a mask and white overalls spraying the hazardous liquid onto food products.

The fake packaging is part of a campaign by pressure group Global Justice Now to highlight what campaigners say is a threat to food standards post-Brexit.

Joy Corrigan from Extinction Rebellion’s Swindon branch supported the campaign.

She said: “These products are not yet available in the UK, but they could be after a trade deal with Trump. And that’s no joke.

“Secret talks have already started between the US and the UK over a deal, and leaked documents have shown government officials discussing how to ‘sell’ American food standards to the British public.

“But we don’t want to be force fed chlorinated chicken or any other nasties. Shoppers need to join the campaign to protect our food standards at

For chicken, the UK has high animal welfare standards and seeks to keep conditions clean at all stages from farm to fork.

Global Justice Now argues that US animal welfare standards lag behind and follow an approach that tolerates dirty conditions and bleaches everything at the end.

The group suggests that this allows more opportunities for disease to spread and leads to an increased risk of food poisoning.

A spokesman added: “For baby food, in the UK there are strict, blanket limits for pesticide and arsenic residues, and there are limits for added sugar plus artificial colours are banned.

“The US has none of this, and previous US trade negotiations have been used to challenge these and other standards.”
